Nice little prog this. It trims the silence at start and end of an MP3 and will do it automatically. Instant opening and saving back from/to MP3. No install, just extract file and run. http://www.logiccell.com/~mp3trim/ mp3Trim is useful to clean-up MP3 files. Once a music track has been encoded to MP3, it becomes much more compact - but also more difficult to edit without decoding/re-encoding, which would be tedious and would degrade the music quality. mp3Trim cleans up your MP3s to recover wasted disk space. mp3Trim trims the parts that you want to discard. mp3Trim can change the volume and fade-in/out your MP3s. mp3Trim works directly on MP3s internal MPEG frames - no need for any WAV conversion - so it is fast and doesn't introduce any music quality degradation! mp3Trim is free forever - no evaluation period or time limit. Want more? for those who want to register, mp3Trim personal edition has bigger file size support and can do some other unique things like CRC fix and VBR header creation. Professional users can check mp3Trim PRO for additional features. October 9th, 2000. mp3Trim FAQ: Q: How does mp3Trim clean MP3s? A: Most MP3s contain some 'junk'. So mp3Trim parses the files looking for MPEG-audio frames and discards the rest... you end up with an absolutely clean MP3 containing only MPEG-audio frames (and eventually an ID3 tag). mp3Trim has a little indicator on how much space you'll recover when saving an MP3. Check below the 'from the end' sentence in mp3Trim main window. Q: What are the file types that mp3Trim support? A: Even if mp3Trim was conceived first to work on MPEG 1 layer III files, it can in fact open all combinations of MPEG 1/2/2.5, layer I/II/III audio files. Q: Can I open ASF (or WAV) files with mp3Trim? A: It depends. Some contain MPEG-audio and in this case, mp3Trim will certainly read the files and extract the MPEG information. Since all other ASF (or WAV) information is discarded, you end up with a clean MP3, i.e. mp3Trim is also an 'ASF (or WAV) to MP3' converter! Q: Does mp3Trim support VBR files? A: Absolutely. Note that VBR MP3s usually have extra 'seek information' embedded in them. mp3Trim displays 'VBR+' when seek information is present, and 'VBR' (no plus) when it's missing. Seek information is used when you 'seek' (move) directly to some point of an MP3. Seek information isn't part of the MPEG standard, doesn't affect the music quality and is not useful for a continuous playback. But some players time display may be confused if it's not present. Q: What is 'digital silence'? A: Digital silence is a bunch of samples set artificially to 0 (silence!) to separate music tracks on CDs. It can easily make its way in MP3s at the beginning or at the end as a little bit of 'dead-zone'. One nice feature of mp3Trim is that it is automatically able to recognize the silence in most MP3s. Who wants to store silence? Let's keep only the music. Q: What's the biggest file size that mp3Trim can handle? A: mp3Trim file size support is not expressed in raw byte size but in number of MPEG frames. That makes the assertion of the limit a little more difficult. But for MPEG 1 layer III at 44.1kHz (MP3s made from Audio-CDs and usually in this format), mp3Trim reads up to 7 minutes of music, so most music tracks should work. Note: The 'Advanced info' dialog box in mp3Trim shows the MPEG frame usage
